Administrative / biographical background:

A Cattle Committee was set up on 31 July 1934 under the Cattle Industry (Emergency Provisions) Act of that year to administer the cattle subsidy. In 1937 it was succeeded by a Livestock Commission under the Livestock Industry Act 1937. The functions of the commission were to advise on and keep under review the arrangements for the production, marketing, slaughter, sale and consumption of livestock; and to prepare schemes for such matters as the administration of the cattle subsidy and the regulation of livestock markets. Its main functions were suspended in September 1939 when the Ministry of Food was set up and the commission was dissolved on 15 January 1940, when its remaining functions passed to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. A new Meat and Livestock Commission was established under the Agriculture Act 1967 to improve marketing, production and distribution, and exercises many of the ministry's functions in this field. A Technical Committee on Abattoir Design was appointed on 21 December 1933 on the recommendation of the Reorganisation Committee for Fatstock. Its report was issued on 25 June 1934.
