Content: Folios 508-510. Workhouse Inspection Report Form from Mr Hurst [Norman Edward Hurst], Poor Law Inspector, to the Poor Law Board, reporting his inspection of the Reeth Poor Law Union Workhouse on 5 October 1853; includes details of medical provision, management of the school, the vagrant wards, numbers of inmates. Hurst reports that the four children in the workhouse attend the nearby free school and that their progress is not satisfactory; that the workhouse has 16 inmates, the same number as at his last inspection; and that the master, matron and porter receive weekly payments of 4s in lieu of rations as reported at his last inspection and that he assumes the Board do not object. Annotated: with the instruction that if the sanction of the Board has not been obtained for payment in lieu of rations, the inspector should recommend to the clerk that he sends a resolution of the guardians to the Board for approval.
