Description:
Content: Folios 486-487. Workhouse Inspection Report Form from N Edward Hurst, Poor Law Inspector, to the Poor Law Board, reporting his inspection of the Reeth Poor Law Union Workhouse on 3 June 1853; includes details of medical provision, schooling, numbers of inmates. The Inspector notes that the guardians have been asked to report to the Board on the fitness of the master and matron to continue in their posts, and that his opinion is favourable to their continuance. The Inspector notes that weekly payments of 4s are made to the master, matron and porter in lieu of rations, an arrangement without sanction but which he believes is not objected to by the auditor. He recommends that the Board call attention to this irregularity. Annotated: 10 October 1853 that the clerk promises to report the payments, but that it seems that the auditor should have disallowed them as being without sanction by the Board. Being in the nature of salaries, the Board by the Poor Law Amendment Act are required to regulate them, and the auditor should be so instructed so that uniformity can be maintained. 21534/1853.
