Description:
Content: Folios 147-148. Workhouse Inspection Report Form from Mr W H T Hawley [William Henry Toovey Hawley], Poor Law Inspector, to the Poor Law Board, reporting his inspection of the Reeth Poor Law Union Workhouse on 19 May 1848; includes details of medical provision, management of the school, the vagrant wards, numbers of inmates etc. Hawley notes that the vagrant wards are not yet completed and that vagrants are therefore received into the sick wards, that the receiving wards are very damp, and that no preparations are made for the reception of paupers: he had ordered that beds be placed in them and that they be thoroughly aired. There are only three young girls in the workhouse who are instructed by the master. The vagrant wards are under repair, due to be completed in a few days. Vagrants break stones in the same place as other inmates. Hawley ordered the master to septarate them and pointed out a proper place for them to work in. There were eleven inmates in the workhouse on the day of the inspection. Proper extracts of the acts and regulations were not posted in the workhouse. The new books had not yet been kept, a subject of septarate correspondence. Relief tickets had not yet been issued to the paupers. 15315/1848. Poor Law Union Number 555.
