Description:

Folio 384-385. Letter from Lord Maynard of Easton Lodge, [Essex], enclosing the resolutions of the magistrates of Essex following a meeting held at the Shire Hall, Chelmsford, on Wednesday 8 December 1830 asking that troops be sent to Chelmsford, Braintree, Colchester and Warley. The Lord Lieutenant, Lord Viscount Maynard chaired the meeting, which included the grand jury of the present Special Gaol Delivery and was held in consequence of the disturbances and riots taking place in the county.

The resolutions are:

  • They are determined to maintain the law and put down disturbances.
  • All occupiers of land, tradesmen and other are to lend assistance.
  • Clerks of the divisions to draw up lists of special constables and other willing to be sworn in.
  • Clerks of the divisions to draw up lists on potential special constable on horseback to form a special force.
  • To promptly carry these resolutions into action.
  • Remuneration for the special constables to be set by the magistrates.
  • Copies of the charge of William Elias Taunton be printed and distributed.
  • Clerks of the divisions to report to the clerk of the peace on the take up of the resolutions.
  • This meeting may feel it necessary to suppress every meeting threatening the public peace.
