Administrative / biographical background:

National collective agreements are those made between organisations of employers (or public organisations) and organisations of workers, or by Joint Industrial Councils and similar bodies. There is considerable variation in the form of these agreements, which relate mainly to manual employees. Some only provide details of minimum wage rates, but others also include some or all of the following:

  • normal weekly hours for which basic rates are payable;
  • minimum entitlements for pieceworkers, shift workers and other special categories;
  • guaranteed payments;
  • rates of pay for overtime working;
  • rates of wages for young people;
  • paid holiday entitlements.
