Administrative / biographical background:

The Radioactive Substances Advisory Committee was established under the Radioactive Substances Act 1948 s6. The members were to be appointed jointly by the Minister of Health, Secretary of State for Scotland, the Minister of Supply and the Minister of Health and Local Government for Northern Ireland, after consultation with professional and technical organisations. In addition, the committee had sub-committees to bring outside expert advice to bear on specialist subjects.

Under the Radiological Protection Act 1970, the committee was replaced by the National Radiological Protection Board Statutory Advisory Committee.
