The documents in this series are records of the Department of Employment and Productivity and the Department of Employment and consist of files documenting the investigation of those race relations cases brought before the Race Relations Board which concern the activities of the department and its officials, and involving liabilities incurred by the department and accusations made against the department's staff.

Each file consists of the original complaint, subsequent correspondence and the Race Relations Board's final decision. The description of each file refers to the section of the Race Relations Act 1968 under which the complaint was made.

The Race Relations Board was formed following the Race Relations Act 1965. Prohibition of discrimination was then extended by the following sections of the Race Relations Act 1968:

  • s2 provision of goods, facilities and services;
  • s3(1)(a) refusal of employment;
  • s3(1)(b) terms and conditions of employment;
  • s3(1)(c) dismissal;
  • s4(1) membership of a trade union, employers' or trade organisation;
  • s5 accommodation;
  • s6 advertisements and notices.
  • s17 exists as an axial cross-reference to several other sections of the Act.
