Description: |
Folios 26-29. Letter from C S Crouch, Mayor of Hastings, Sussex, reporting the shooting by smugglers of two coastguards. Smugglers are coming to the town armed and ready to resist the revenue officers. On 6 February near Rye the smugglers assembled with 6 guns, 'and in running their Tubs severely wounded and beat several of the Coast Guards'. Foiled in their attempts to run their goods they returned home firing volleys 'in a menacing manner'. In his role as coroner, Crouch has held inquests into the bodies of two coast guards. References are made to William Gampton and David Watts, coastguards, the latter having been shot dead. Details are given of the conflicts between the coast guards and smugglers. |
