Administrative / biographical background:

The society was established in 1899. By 1910 its central premises in Church Street, with branches in Whitby Road and Stanley Road, offered groceries, provisions, hardware, drapery, tailoring, boots and shoes, and coal. Further branches were established in Chester Road, Whitby, Eastham, Wellington Road, Princes Road and Overpool: additional services included confectionery, dairy, butchery, bakery and fish. The Society transferred its business to Co-operative Retail Services Ltd in July 1982.
