Administrative / biographical background:

The Staines and Egham Gas Light & Coke Co. was a non-statutory Co. set up in 1833. The company changed its name to the Staines and Egham District Gas & Coke Co. and gained statutory powers in 1871. The works were situated on the Causeway of the River Thames and were extended in 1887; further land was purchased and a new works built in 1913.

 

The company was taken over by Brentford Gas Co. in 1915 and subsequently passed to the Gas Light and Coke Co. in 1926. The manufacturing works was finally closed in 1955 and dismantled a year later. The site remained as a holder station.
