From: Theobald, archbishop of Canterbury To: B, prior of La Charité-sur-Loire ('conventus... Sancte marie de Caritate') [Niève, France] At the request of King Stephen and Queen Matilda, Theobald has absolved Clarembald, prior of Bermondsey, and 12 of his monks from the obedience and subjection they owe to the priory of La Charité and to Abbot Peter [the Venerable] and Cluny Abbey [Saône-et-Loire, France] and also absolves them on behalf of Peter and the prior of La Charité ('ex parte... vestra'). He has given them to the king and queen to build ('construo') their abbey of Faversham, which shall remain as free as the abbey of Reading [Berkshire]. The absolution was made in the presence of the bishop of Rochester and his clerks, the prior of Canterbury and his clerks and very many others, both clerks and laymen. No date.
