Administrative / biographical background:

Founded as West Ham Dispensary in 1861, a Hospital was opened as the West Ham and Eastern General Hospital in 1890. It first extended in 1895 and incorporated by Royal Charter in 1917 as Queen Mary's Hospital for the East End. It was administered as an acute hospital by Newham Health District until its closure with the transfer of acute services to Newham General Hospital, Glen Road, Plaistow (for which see records).
