Containing manuscripts typescripts and related material comprising of: published works:- travel guides 1922-1923, novels written under the pseudonym of Julian Laverack 1924-1929, walking companions and guides on Yorkshire 1928-1951, semi-autobiographical books 1942-1946, notebooks c1940's-1957, and poems 1949, unpublished material:- with novels (in various stages) and short stories 1924-c1957, essays and articles c1931-c1950, plays c1950, miscellaneous literary items nd [c1920-1940's], poems nd, miscellaneous items 1909-c1957, (Alfred J Brown developed as a long distance walker after ill health, and his main interest was Yorkshire which he explored from end to end. He was passionately fond of the moors and had a unique and unrivalled knowledge of Yorkshire. He was best know for his books about the Yorkshire Dales, although he also wrote semi-autobiographical novels about his war time experiences, as well as short stories and articles. He later became a hotelier in Goathland and published the story of this venture.)
