Rebound, c. 1851, in brown calf, incorporating as onlays the covers of the original English romanesque binding, leather, brown, blind-tooled (packing of boards formerly made from fragments of a 10th-century sacramentary, now SAL/MS/154*). See G. D. Hobson, English Binding before 1500 (1929), 29, pls. 4, 5. Provenance (see Biddle, 1-3):- Owned by John Young (1585-1655), Dean of Westminster (1616); descended to his grand-daughter; and to her nephew, the Rev. John Bailey, rector of South Cadbury, Som., who identified it in 1739 and informed Browne Willis, FSA (see copy of letter of Bailey to Willis in SAL/MS/264, fol. 33); exhibited to SA by the Rev. Charles Lyttelton (PSA 1765), 29 Jan. 1756 (Minute Book VII, fol. 238v; note by him, 10 Feb. 1756, bound in, fols. iii-iv; longer paper in Ants Papers, 1756) when the MS was in the possession of James West, PRS, FSA (?1704-72; his signature, 1756, fol. 1); West's sale, 3 March 1773, lot 62; purchased by Gustavus Brander (1720-87), who added (fol. iv) a short note, 17 May 1776 (printed by Biddle (1976), 2) below Lyttelton's description; Brander's sale, Leigh and Sotheby, 8-13 Feb. 1790, lot 1170; purchased for SA by John Topham, Treasurer SA, for five guineas (Council Minutes, 19 Feb. 1790). Ink no. '120' on the flyleaf, fol. ii.
