The Border Conference Estate Ltd. was formed in 1947 'to carry on the industry, business or trade of managing and conducting a conference house or houses for the holding of conferences, lectures, lecture schools, and other gatherings of the churches affiliated to the Durham and Northumberland Congregational Union for the purpose of the furtherance or promotion of their religious work or for the educational purposes and for the holding of conferences, lectures and lecture schools and other gatherings of the Congregational Union of England and Wales and the Congregational Union of Scotland and of other such denominations of the Christian Church or inter-denominational movements or societies as the Society shall approve for the furtherance or promotion of their religious or educational work...'. In particular the company was responsible for running Otterburn Burn Hall Hotel which opened in 1949 and was run as an independent charitable trust holiday & conference centre. It continued to do so until 1986 when the property was sold to Herrington Burn YMCA.
