The CD-ROM The New Towns Record (available in the Library reading Room) contains information, photographs, books and documents relating to all New Towns, including a complete set of annual reports.

 

It includes copies of items held in HALS amongst the records of the Commission for the new Towns, though unfortunately it does not specify which items are held here and which are from other sources.

Administrative / biographical background:

Hemel Hempstead was the third New Town to be created under the New Towns Act 1946, being designated on 4 February 1947. On 1 April 1962 the Commission for the New Towns (which was established as a result of the New Towns Act 1959) took over the administration of the town from the Development Corporation by means of a Local Committee. In November 1982 the Commission closed its Hertfordshire Offices and certain of its records which were no longer required for current administrative purposes were transferred the County Record Office.
