Note on personnel records:

The main personnel records for Lancashire Constabulary are the examination books (PLA 11) and the record sheets (PLA 54). Indexes are available on the catalogue shelves, labelled 'Police Indexes: County'. Although there is a 85 year closure on the examination books, and the record sheets are closed indefinitely, searchers can apply for a photocopy of an officer's record to be sent by post provided that the officer joined more than 85 years ago. For more details, see PLA 11 and the indexes.

Other useful personnel records are the numerical registers (PLA 12), the photograph books (PLA 13) and pension and other records (PLA 14)

General access arrangements: there is unrestricted access to police records over 30 years old, apart from personnel records as explained above. Also, any published items less than 30 years old (eg annual reports) are also open

Immediate source of acquisition:

Deposited by the Chief Constable in Jan 1961 and on 17 Jul and 29 Nov 1972 and 31 Aug 1978. Later deposits as marked.

POLICE RECORDS

As well as the Lancashire Constabulary, there were separate police forces in the following boroughs: Accrington*, Ashton under Lyne*, Bacup*, Barrow in Furness, Blackburn, Bolton, Bootle, Burnley, Clithero*, Lancaster*, Liverpool, Manchester, Oldham, Preston, Rochdale, St Helens, Salford, Southport, Warrington and Wigan.

Those asterisked were merged with the county force in 1947 while the rest were similarly merged in 1969 except Bootle/Liverpool and Manchester/Salford which formed two joint forces in 1969.

In 1974, with Local Government Reorganisation, the police forces were again reorganised according to the new county boundaries, ie Lancashire, Cumbria, Cheshire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester Police.

Also available is a summary list of personnel records and where to find them, with dates of operation of each force. Please ask for this list
