Administrative / biographical background:

Two charity schools, one called the English School in Bowden Street (established prior to 1630) and the other the Blue Coat School in Crediton Churchyard, were united in 1814 to form the Crediton United Charity School which was run on the Madras system and housed in a building erected in 1806 by the Trustees of Sir John Hayward's Charity on part of Paignton Field, Crediton. New buildings for the school were erected in East Street by the trustees of Sir John Hayward's Charity and opened for the new term on 9 Jan. 1860. The school which was thereafter known as Hayward's or Hayward Schools consisted of a Boys' School and a Girls' School. A separate Infants' School was established in 1873 and in 1930 was united with the Girls' School. In 1962 the schools which until then had included both senior and junior children were re-organised as Hayward Primary (mixed) School and the seniors were transferred to other schools. The official number of Hayward Schools was formerly 6098, then 143 and subsequently 2057.
