Administrative / biographical background:

The scheme for a railway from Berwick through Alfriston to Birling was initiated by Frank Stileman, engineer to Eastbourne Waterworks Company (though in a private capacity) and Henry Michell Whitley, with the support of Carew Davies Gilbert and the Duke of Devonshire, to take coal to Friston Pumping Station, to facilitate the development of Birling, and to accommodate the Cuckmere Valley district. It was thrown out at an inquiry in May 1898, being opposed by J E A Gwynne of Folkington Manor, Viscount Gage and the Commissioners of Levels.
