Administrative / biographical background:

The church was originally housed in premises in Waterloo Passage which subsequently housed the Waterloo Place British School (ESC 88). In 1834 a building on Bourne Street, which had been licensed as a theatre since 1831, was purchased for £780 and the adjoining house and cottage for £600. Alterations were made in 1859 and 1866 (NMB/60/1/1; J Manwaring Baines Historic Hastings (1963) 288, 309)
