Stoneyfield was an enclosed, former open field on the boundary between Penkhull and Wolstanton, and the mansion called Stoneyfields was built on a plot on the southern edge of it for the Newcastle solicitor Henry Hatrell c. 1780. The remainder of the Stoneyfield was mainly the property of the Cotton family of Bellaport, Shropshire. The two parts were joined and later separated again. The family names involved in the complex history of the property are Boyer, Hatrell, Cotton, Ward, Bent, Caldwell, Firmstone, Jones, Peake, Meakin, and , marginally, Stanier and the Marquess of Stafford. The final owner represented in these bundles is Ernest Eric Young, surgeon, who purchased the mansion and gardens in 1923. His property was in mortgage to the Tunstall Building Society until 1941. |
