Title: Notes on the Lovat Scouts
Description:

Joseph Pease put down in this volume a recollection of his activities between 1914 and 1918 in the Lovat Scouts Regiment. This extract was intended for the writing of the history of "A subalterns Adventures in the World War I." Apart from his recollection he used the letters contained in JPG 1/1.

 

His experiences were focused on the following places:-

 

1. Huntingdon. He was with the Highland Mounted Brigade in September 1914. This relates his commission to the Lovat Scouts Regiment. His training experiences and the organization of the Lovat Scouts Regiment.

 

2. Lincolnshire Coast Defence. He was first assigned to head the Regiment for the Defence of Lincolnshire Coast. In May 1915 his regiment moved to Norfolk where they were actively engaged in military training.

 

3. Salonika. They landed at Salonika in summer 1917. His regiment launched an attack on Kishecki and Salmah.

 

4. Mudhos Harbour. The Highland Brigade sailed on troopship Andria via Malta and Alexandria to Mudhos Harbour. Here they were trained in the handling of machine guns and other new weapons - Vickers guns.

 

5. Gallipoli. In September 1915 they arrived Gallipoli. The Brigade suffered greatly from the effects of snow storm.

 

6. Egypt. They were in Egypt from December 1915 to October 1916. They camped at Cairo, Kantara, and Alexandria. The significance of their stay was seen in military training.

 

7. Italy. In July 1918 he moved to Italy for an Intelligence Course.

1. Copy of letter sent to his father from Gallipoli informing him that he was sick in the Scottish Field Hospital. (1 p) 7 Oct. 1915

 

2½ Copy of another letter to his father about his sickness in the Scottish Field Hospital. (2 pp) 9 Oct. 1915

 

3. Copy of a letter to his mother that he has just recovered from diarrhoea. 11 Oct. 1915

 

4. Copy of a letter to his father that he was back in the trenches again. 14 Oct. 1915

 

5. Copy of a letter to his father about the attack of snipers who have been a nuisance in front of them. (2 pp) 18 Oct. 1915

 

6. Copy of letter to his mother thanking her for two parcels sent. He mentions in this letter that the enemy plastered them with shells. He also tells her his engagement in bombing the enemy trenches. (2 pp) 29 Oct. 1915

 

7. Copy of letter to his mother about their daily routine for the past months. 30 Oct. 1915

 

8. Copy of letter to his mother they were in Reserve trenches having a rest after being in the firing line for a month. He mentions that he walked to the Bay and saw one of their supply ships being shelled. (3 pp) 4 Nov. 1915

 

9. Copy of letter to his father that they were in Reserve trenches and have dug over a mile of new trenches, dug outs, cook houses, Communicating trenches etc. (2 pp) 4-5 Nov. 1915

 

10. Copy of letter to his mother about 'Rat Story'. He acknowledged receipt of the parcels sent to him. He also mentioned that it was likely they will go to the firing line. (2 pp) 22 Nov. 1915

 

11. STORM - Summary of events as recorded by his mother. (3 pp)

 

9. Copies of letters he wrote to his parents from Egypt.

 

1. Copy of letter to his mother that they were in Alexandria. 28 Dec. 1915

 

2. Copy of letter written in Cairo to his mother that he had received the parcels sent. Would like somebody to tell him the history of Egypt. 7 Jan. 1916

 

3. Copy of letter written at Inina Camp, Cairo to his father that they were encamped close to the pyramids. He describes the weather and the camp. (2 pp) 8 Jan. 1916

 

4. Copy of letter written at the Union Club, Alexandria Egypt to his father that he arrived Alexandria. He informs his father that his leave had started and would sail to UK the following day. 26 Aug. 1916

 

5. Copy of letter written at Abbassia Barracks, Cairo, Egypt to his mother that he had arrived. He describes his regiment he met. 23 Oct. 1916

 

6. Copy of letter written at Abbassia Barracks, Cairo, to his father that they might soon be moved to reinforce the stress. (1 p) 24 Oct. 1916

 

7. Copy of letter written to his mother about her birthday. 27 Oct. 1916
