Details of Ep/II/29/1
Reference: Ep/II/29/1
Title: London and Welsh original Court documents
Description:

This volume, instead of containing copies of documents which were considered important precedents, consists of original documents bound into a volume with occasional headings about their contents. The practice was not unusual amongst proctors of the ecclesiastical courts during the early 17th century and other volumes are preserved amongst the Canterbury diocesan records and at Liverpool University Library. Copies of all those documents somewhat loosely known as miscellaneous court proceedings were made by the registrar for both the proctors in a cause and so an elderly proctor would have a large selection of documents from which to choose. This volume was apparently compiled by a Welsh proctor from St. Asaph diocese who at the beginning of the century moved first to Rochester and then to London where he became a member of Doctors' Commons. How it found its way to Lewes is not known though the parchment cover bears the names of James Curtis and John Richardson as well as the title: "Liber Libellorum et aliorum Actuum et instrumentorum in diversis casibus et causis." The compiler has shown a considerable sense of arrangement and the volume falls naturally into sections of allegations, articles, libels, interrogatories and sentences. There is a list of contents at the beginning.
