Thomas Pelham, first Earl of Chichester, had died at Stanmer on 8 Jan 1805. The letter, written on the anniversary, suggests that Lady Chichester's correspondent was a member or a close friend of the family. Ann Chichester who, as Ann Frankland, had married Thomas Pelham in 1754, died at Malling on 5 Mar 1813 in her 79th year (GEC)
