Administrative / biographical background:

St. John's was built by Edward Byrom following an Act of Parliament, 1768. The foundation stone was laid on 28 April 1768 and the church consecrated on 7 July 1769. It was assigned a District by Order in Council, 14 September 1838 (London Gazette, 29 March 1839).

St. John's parish was united with St. Matthew's as the parish of St. Matthew and St. John by Order in Council, 7 May 1928 (London Gazette, 7 May 1928), when St. Matthew's became the parish church, but St. John's Parsonage House served the united benefice. St. John's church was demolished in 1931.

In 1943 by Order in Council, 20 May (London Gazette, 21 May) the parish of St. Matthew and St. John joined the parish of St. Ann and St. Mary and the united benefices became St. Ann's parish.
