Thomas Firth and Sons was founded in 1837 and registered as a company in 1881. It amalgamated with John Brown and Company Ltd of Sheffield in the 1930s to become Firth Brown, which itself became one of the 14 major UK steel companies that formed the British Steel Corporation in 1967.
