The collection held by Reading University Library consists chiefly of around 60,000 incoming letters, covering the period 1875 to 1967, which remained after the correspondence from the more significant authors had been removed. However, the sorting process was not exhaustive, and letters from well-known writers such as Hilaire Belloc, Rudyard Kipling and W.B. Yeats remain with the Reading collection.

A series of large albums containing illustrations used in Macmillan books is included, as are microfilm copies of Macmillan records in the British Library.

Early cash books and catalogues of books from when Macmillan were based in Cambridge at Trinity Street can be found in the Bowes & Bowes (Cambridge) Ltd Archive (archive reference code: BAB)
