The papers of Judge J H A Stucley (1916-1988), which are described in this list, were received in the Record Office as a gift on 25 November 1988, via the British Records Association. (BRA No. 2383)

Administrative / biographical background:

Judge Stucley was born on 12 July 1916, the second son of Sir Hugh Stucley of Affeton Castle, East Worlington. After serving in the Navy, he was called to the Bar in 1957 and became a Recorder of the Crown Court in 1972. He was appointed a Circuit Judge on the South-East Circuit in 1974. He wrote two books- Affeton Castle: a lost Devon village (1967) and Sir Bevill Grenvile and his times (1983). Judge Stucley died on 30 March 1988. For an obituary, see The Times, 4 April 1988.
