Description:

Probate copy of the will of John Gulson of Coventry, skinner, proved 25 May 1743. Executors John Harris, John Freeth and William Fowler.

 

(1) To the wife of the testator £20, a chest of drawers, an old corner cupboard, square cupboard, best set of china, silver boat, set of tea spoons, silver pair of tongs, tea chest and other property she possessed before marriage.

 

(2) To her sons John and Charles England, £10 each.

 

(3) To Mary, daughter of the testator, £5, her share being given to her on marriage.

 

(4) To John Howell, servant of the testator £5.

 

(5) All the above mentioned bequests to be paid one year after the decease of the testator.

 

(6) To John, son of the testator, £100 to be paid at the age of 21.

 

(7) Profits of mills, closes etc., of the Corporation to be paid to the executors, for the education of John Gulson, his apprenticeship, the residue to be paid to him at the age of 21.

 

(8) Testator confirms settlements of his late and present wives.

 

All properties, re the jointure of his present wife to be administered by the executors.

 

(9) Residue of real and personal property to be sold to the executors after death of testator, three daughters of the testator, Sarah, Ann and Elizabeth (Mary having received her marriage portion) to receive £500 on attaining the age of 21 or marriage.

 

(10) Residue to son of testator to value of £1000.

 

(11) If any of the children of the testator die before the age of 21, their share is to be divided equally between the survivors.

 

(12) If all children die, property is to be bequeathed to children of brother William Gulson, sister Joan Wiggins and brother-in-law Thomas Lloyd and two sons-in-law, John and Charles England.

 

(13) One guinea to each of the executors for expenses.

 

(14) Tuition and guardianship of son to executors until age of 21 and daughters until 21 or their marriage.

 

(15) Codicil of will; a house on the South side of Smithford Street, re jointure of first wife; several houses on the South side of Smithford Street occupied by Joseph Budworth, John Comley and William Hancox, re the jointure of second wife, 4 houses called 'The New Buildings' occupied by Soloman Sharp, John Hancox, Soloman Sharp jnr. and Thomas Robinson and Oughton's Mill are to be part of the share of the testatrix.
