Administrative / biographical background:

One of the original guaranteed railway companies. Formed in 1857 and incorporated by Act of Parliament in the same year. First portion of the line ran from Calcutta to the Ganges at Kushtia and Damukdia and was opened in 1862. In 1870 the E.B.R. took over the running of the Calcutta and South Eastern Railway (see L/AG/46/8). By 1883 its eastern terminus was at Goalundo in Faridpur District. In 1884 when its contract with Government terminated the E.B.R. amalgamated with the Northern Bengal State Railway to form the Eastern Bengal State Railway.
