John Holmes was a successful Leeds draper with a passion for collecting antiquities. In 1873 he travelled to Egypt, Palestine, Turkey, Cyprus, Greece and Italy to restore his health. He acquired a large number of antiquities on his journey. Following the death of his wife, John Homes decided to sell his collection and live abroad. In 1882 the Leeds City Council purchased the Holmes collection. Many of which can still be recognised in the Leeds Museums and Galleries archaeological collections.
