Title: Political and personal papers of Henry Addington, 1st Viscount Sidmouth
Description:

Political and personal correspondence and papers, 1705, 1754-1824, of Henry Addington (1757-1844), 1st Viscount Sidmouth, 1805, MP for Devizes, 1783-1805, Speaker of the House of Commons, 1789-1801, Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer, 1801-1804, Lord President of the Council, January-July 1805, 1806-1807, April-June 1812, Lord Privy Seal, February-October, 1806, Home Secretary, 1812-1822, Cabinet Minister without office, 1822-1824. Included amongst these papers are some family and personal correspondence, c1772-1790, of Addington's father, Doctor Anthony Addington MD (died 1790), whose medical practice in London brought him into contact and close friendship with many politically prominent people

Henry Addington was a prominent participant in national affairs from 1789 to 1824 particularly as Prime Minister of the conservative pro-peace and financial retrenchment government of 1801-1804 and as Home Secretary, 1812-1822, in which position he actively enforced the government's policy against political and economic unrest - the repression of the Luddites and the Peterloo Massacre being the most notable examples of this. The papers relate to his activities in these roles and to his political career in general throughout the period, many of them being letters and notes to and from other prominent people in national affairs of the time including George III, William Pitt, Nelson, Lord Grenville, Lord Liverpool, Lord Castlereagh, the Duke of Wellington and William Wilberforce

Although part of a larger collection of family and estate records, these papers have always been identified as a distinct and important, but not necessarily comprehensive (there may be similar stray unlisted papers in the collection), group of records relating to Henry Addington's official and political career and have been kept and catalogued together since their deposit in the Devon Record Office in 1955

Date: 1705, 1754-1824
Arrangement:

The papers mainly cover the period up to 1824 when he was in office and politically active.
