Bideford Grammar School The school is said to have been founded in the sixteenth century and was originally sited in Alhalland Street, where it was rebuilt in 1686. In 1873 the school moved to a site on Northdown Road. It was enlarged in 1908 and recognised as a grant-earning secondary school by the Board of Education. Since 1929, the school has been maintained by Devon County Council. The Abbotsham Road buildings were erected in 1934-1935 and girls were first admitted to the school in 1972. Bideford County Secondary School The County Secondary School came into existence in 1944. The school was previously the Senior School at Geneva Place. The Geneva Place School was built in 1903 for Girls and Infants. After a fire, the Old Town School for Boys was transferred to Geneva Place. Following reorganisation in 1932, the senior pupils became a separate school on the upper floor of the building. In 1955 and 1958 the infants and juniors were transferred to the New Pynes County Infants School and Westcroft County Junior School respectively. Bideford Upper Board School The Upper Board School at Coldharbour or Gunstone was built as a British School in 1840 and became a Board School c.1871. The school closed c.1920 and the boys were transferred to Old Town School. Bideford Old Town Boys School The school was built as a National School at the top of the High Street in 1823 at the expense of Bideford Bridge Trust. The school became a Board School for girls and infants in 1871. In 1903 the girls and infants were transferred to the new school at Geneva Place and the school became Old Town Boys School. Boys from the Coldharbour or Gunstone Street Boys school were transferred to Old Town School in 1920 and the school burnt down, with its records, in 1926. The boys were transferred to Geneva Place School. |
