For 23 years, the donor worked as a jeweller in Chorlton cum Hardy. In October he will be moving to Scarborough.

His involvement in photography started about 25 years ago, and has been developed seriously in the last four years. His interest concentrated on candid scenes taken in the streets of Manchester and Salford and since 1983 he has spent three days a week roving the streets.

He works in black and white, uses a Leica Rangefinder and does his own printing.

He is a member of Bury Photographic Society.

In 1986 he published a book of his photographs.

For the years 1966-1987 Adrian Gatie worked in the jewelry trade, from 1975-87 in the North West. In 1987 he moved to the east coast. His interest in photography started in the early 1960s and developed seriousely from 1980, when his interest was focused on street scenes of Manchester and Salford. At this time he worked only in black and white. Since 1987 he has earned his living solely from photography. In 1986 his book "In Penumbria" was published and is now out of print. The accompanying exhibition of the same name, which included all of the photographs in the D53 collection, toured throughout the UK in 1987-88. Then came exhibitions Nexus (1989-90), An Adjustment of Expectations (1991-93), Beach Bodies (1995-96), Separated Dreams (1997) and Our Town (1998). Although he now works mainly in theatrical production photography, he still roams the streets of Manchester and its satellite towns, London, Leeds etc and is working on another book, working title "Holding Together". The Legendary photographer Robert Frank has given invaluable help to Adrian Gatie in sequencing and editing the images for this.
