Administrative / biographical background:

This school was opened in 1931. The status of Farnworth School had been raised to that of a Grammar School in 1507 upon its endowment by William Smith. This school was closed in 1904 and its pupils and endowments were transferred to Widnes Secondary School, which had been opened in 1897. This school's buildings were shared with the Municipal Technical College until 1931, when the school was transferred to new buildings and renamed as the Wade Deacon Grammar School. It was reorganised as a comprehensive school in 1974
