Title: | RYDER OF REMPSTONE ARCHIVE |
Description: |
Records of the Rempstone and Wareham Estates and of the Calcraft family and descendants The greater part of this deposit consists of deeds and papers relating to the Dorset estates of the Calcraft family, mainly in Wareham and Purbeck. Most of these were acquired by John Calcraft (1726-1772), who bought the Rempstone estate in 1757. The manor of Wareham and Drax family property there were purchased in 1768 and John Calcraft and his successors afterwards acquired much of the rest of the borough, apparently with the main object of improving their electoral interest. Several surveys of Wareham in this collection seem to have been compiled for electoral purposes, and the deeds and papers contain some other material illustrating the management of a "pocket borough". For this reason poll books and other documents specifically concerning elections have been included under the heading ESTATE. The documents also include records of Calcraft property in Buckinghamshire, Essex, Kent, Lincolnshire, London, Somerset and Wiltshire, with a few items relating to other counties and some family and miscellaneous papers. There are some interesting items arising out of the careers of John Calcraft in the Pay Office and War Office and as an Army agent in the eighteenth century and of Sir Henry George Calcraft at the Board of Trade in the nineteenth.
