Administrative / biographical background: |
A dispensary for the 'relief of the sick poor in this town and neighbourhood' was founded by public subscription in 1792, and received £100 a year from the corporation. The first dispensary building opened in Frenchgate in the following year. A new building, housing both dispensary and a new infirmary with twenty-three beds was opened at the junction of Wood street and Whittaker street in 1867 and extended in 1905. The infirmary moved to its present site in Thorne Road in 1930. The former premises were acquired by the Doncaster County Borough Council and housed the Directorate of Education. The building was demolished in 1997. Further information is to be found in H. Marsland, 'The Provision of Medical Treatment for the Sick Poor, the Doncaster Dispensary 1792-1867', (University of Warwick, MA dissertation, 1980) and G. Swann, The Doncaster Royal Infirmary, (Doncaster, 1973). Both these works are available in the library of Doncaster Archives. |
