Title: | Records and correspondence relating to the Disabled Soldiers and Sailors (Hackney) Foundation. |
Description: |
The Foundation was formed after the First World War by G.F.J.Macleod, formerly manager of the Hackney Empire after a meeting held at Hackney Baths on 16 October 1916, chaired by W.F.Fenton Jones. It was proposed to build 100 flats for married men who had been enlisted in any of the fighting forces and disabled, extending provision to those who had served in the police force, post office, local government or railway services suffering from physical disability if there were not enough servicemen. In June 1919 proposals were made to purchase land on the corner of Blackhorse Road, forming part of the Warner Estate, but guns and searchlight stations on the site prevented this and a site was bought from Hackney Council at the junction of Fletching and Wattisfield Roads. The ensuing buildings were designed by Gunton and Gunton, architects and opened in 1923. In 1930 negotiations were again resumed for the purchase of the Blackhorse Road site. There are no details later than 1930 contained in the records. Yate's involvement seems to have been confined to efforts to revise the articles of association during his mayoraility. |
