Incorporated Company of Hostmen of Newcastle

Hostmen or oastemen are first mentioned in a statute of Henry IV in 1404, which provided hospitality for foreign merchants visiting ports in England and ensured that their ships were correctly fitted-out. In Newcastle the Hostmens Company developed from the Company of Merchant Adventurers. This function changed over time and the company became exclusively concerned with the shipping of coals along the River Tyne.

The Hostmens Company of Newcastle was incorporated by a charter of Elizabeth I dated 22 March 1599/1600 in return for which the Company promised to pay a duty of one shilling per chaldron of coal shipped on the River Tyne to the crown. After this the Hostmen claimed a monopoly on the shipping of coals and other stones in the Newcastle area. Many disputes arose as a consequence of this and in 1603, after complaints from the Newcastle Guild Fraternity, all freemen were permitted to join the company.

The Hostmen met in the Mayors Chamber and were made-up of men from all trades within the city. The Company is still in existence.
