Administrative / biographical background:

The School of Science and Art, Bath Lane was established in 1877 as part of the Bath Lane Day Schools. It was formally opened in 1878.

 

In 1894 the School was renamed Rutherford College in honour of its founder, Dr John Hunter Rutherford. The running of the College was taken over by Newcastle City Council's Education Committee in 1905.
