Administrative / biographical background:

The Herne Bay Gas and Coke Company Ltd Articles of Association are dated 1882 although the company was registered in 1864. The gasworks were situated on King St, Herne Bay. The area of supply was extended to include Reculver in 1903. The company was empowered to supply electricity by AoP in 1913 and became the Herne Bay Gas & Electricity Company Ltd. This was changed by special resolution in 1921 when it reverted back to the Herne Bay Gas Company. A controlling interest in the company was obtained by the South East Gas Corporation in 1934. On nationalisation in 1949, the undertaking became part of the Kent County Division of SEGB.
