Richmond had originally been supplied by Brentford; dissatisfaction with supply prompted the formation of a local company in 1847, the works were built on Lower Richmond Road the following year. In 1851 the works were leased to Mr Spicer, the Manager, who then supplied the Co with gas. In 1853 the company was dissolved and Richmond Gas Co. Ltd was formed, this was a non statutory company, however, in 1867 the Richmond Gas Act conferred statutory powers on the company amalgamated with Brentford Gas Company, which subsequently amalgamated, with the Gas Light & Coke Co. in 1926. The Richmond manufacturing works was closed down in 1933 but the site remained as a holder station.
