Administrative / biographical background:

The parish of St George Bloomsbury was created in 1731 when it was separated from the parish of St Giles in the Fields. St George was one of the churches built under the 'Act for building fifty new churches in about the City of Westminster and suburbs thereof 1711'. In 1774 a joint vestry was created by Act of Parliament to deal with civil matters in the parishes of St Giles in the Fields and St George Bloomsbury, though the parishes remained separate for ecclesiastical purposes.
