Administrative / biographical background: |
The Earldom was created in 1626 but doubts were cast on the paternity of the 1st Earl's sons, the 2nd and 3rd Earls. The matter was unresolved until the 19th century, when after a long and expensive investigation the Lords determined in 1813 that the 8th Earl was not entitled to the title of Earl of Banbury, and the use of the title was dropped. The 8th Earl was subsequently known as General Knollys. His eldest son, known as Viscount Wallingford until 1813, became General Sir William Knollys and (amongst other offices) was Treasurer and Comptroller of the Household of the Prince of Wales and Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod. Of his ten children, Francis was Private Secretary to Edward VII and George V and was created Viscount Knollys; Henry was Comptroller and Private Secretary to Princess Charles of Denmark, afterwards Queen of Norway and was knighted; and Charlotte was Lady in Waiting to the Princess of Wales, later Queen Alexandra, and given the precedence of a baron's daughter. |
