Administrative / biographical background:

Houghton-le-Spring Primitive Methodist Circuit was created a separate circuit from Hetton in May 1891. On 3 December 1932, it amalgamated with the United Methodists to form the Houghton Mautland Street Circuit. On 1 September 1933 they were joined by the West End Branch of the Sunderland (Thornhill) Circuit. Finally, in September 1944 it amalgamated with Houghton William Street (formerly Wesleyan Methodist) Circuit to form the Hougton Methodist Circuit (see MC.HS1).
