Administrative / biographical background:

Mary Bruton was born in about 1888 in Greenwood House, Oldbury-on-Severn, and lived there throughout her life. This collection of documents, photographs, paintings and sketches relates mainly to Oldbury, Thornbury and the surrounding countryside; some records are connected with the Tidenham area and came into Miss Bruton's possession via her relatives, the Joyce family of Stroat House near Tidenham.

The scope of the material reflects Miss Bruton's enthusiastic interest in local history and her talent as an amateur artist. Both she and her father, Charles, were members of several local organizations and societies whose activities are illustrated within the collection.

There is also a small quantity of personal papers and diaries which include items relating to Miss Bruton's connection with Donald Campbell, the world water speed record holder in 1955.
