The collection consists of items relating to and collected by Alfred and Mabel Ruston, who lived in Hackney at various addresses, and by the depositor, who went to Hackney Downs School and was associated with Newington Green Unitarian Church.

 

Files D/F/RUS/22/1-7 cover Alan Ruston's involvement with the Blackfriars Settlement, formerly the University Women's Settlement, who had established a prisoners visiting and after care scheme. Alan Ruston was an active member from 1961-66 and continued to correspond with former prisoners thereafter. The Settlement was based at 44-47 Nelson Square, London SE1.

 

The records consist of reports and background papers produced by the Settlement, which are open, and Alan Ruston's casebooks and letters from offenders, which are closed for 75 years from the last date in each group.
