Administrative / biographical background: |
Benjamin Bond Cabbell was born in 1781. He was a barrister and was MP for St Albans 1846 and for Boston 1847-1857. He purchased the Cromer Hall Estate from Lady Listowel (daughter of Admiral Windham) in 1852 and was High Sheriff for Norfolk in 1854. A prominent freemason, he was Grand Master of Norfolk Province between 1854 and 1874. He was a noted patron of the arts and philanphropist, and was responsible for building the first lifeboat station in Cromer as well as making many other local and national benefactions. He died in 1875 aged 93 and was succeeded at Cromer Hall by his nephew John Cabbell who changed his name to Bond-Cabbell in the same year. John died in 1878 and was succeeded by his son Benjamin Bond Bond-Cabbell who died in 1892 leaving a widow and four children. |
