In July 1840 Robert Nicholson of Manchester (1802-1886) (see 920 NIC/17 and pp. 138-143) married Margaret, daughter of Samuel Thornely of Liverpool, draper. According to a footnote on p. 142 the Thornelys were a Cheshire family, long connected with Hyde Chapel, Gee Cross, Cheshire, and "with the municipal and public life of the Hyde district". Some members of the family had moved to Liverpool, notably William Thornely (1744-1839) and [his nephew or cousin] Samuel Thornely (1793-1881), woollen draper and father of Margaret Nicholson. Samuel Thornely is stated to have been "an active worker for Liberalism and Unitarianism". |
